This past Sunday the New England Patriots were beaten down worse then Jessie Spano after she got addicted to pills.  The once mighty New England Patriots, looked like just another franchise stuck in rebuilding mode.   What the Patriots are going through is no different then what we saw with the Steel Curtain teams of the 70s, the Super Bowl Shufflin Bears and Redskins of the 80′s and the Cocaine Cowboys of the 90′s.  The Patriots in this past decade looked unstoppable at times, and every January were a fixture to be in contention for the Super Bowl.

In 2008 came BellichickGATE, followed by the Giants and David Tyree’s miracle, knocked off the 18-0 Patriots.  The Patriots who had won Super Bowls in 2001,2003 and 2004 seemed like as long as Brady and Bellichek were part of the same team, they would always be a contender.     Even the once great Bellichek who had Emperor Palpatine like qualities from Star Wars and even has the hood to prove it, has lost hie edge.  The 4th and 2 at Indy might have been the final nail in the New England Patriots coffin.  Tom Brady will be 33 by the time next season starts, and may not even be a Patriot after next season.

The Patriots used to have such a strong core that they could add a seasoned veteran (Junior Seau, etc) to be a supporting piece upgrade over an inexperienced younger player.  Now, they are relegated to trying over the hill veterans to fill gaping holes in the foundation (Junior Seau, Fred Taylor, Joey Galloway, etc).  The failure to address the running back position over the past 5 years and passing on such players as Maurice Jones-Drew, Ray Rice, LeSean McCoy, etc has also put all the pressure on the passing game that relies on its quarterback (Brady – still great but clearly not healthy) and its WRS (Welker – unlikely to be 100% next year and Moss – great but takes off way too many plays).

Patriots owner Robert Kraft might be quoting Jessie Spano about the future of his team, “I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so….scared.”
